STORM (Synthesis of Topic Outlines through Retrieval and Multi-perspective Question Asking) is an innovative AI system developed by Stanford University's Open Virtual Assistant Lab (OVAL) that autonomously generates comprehensive, Wikipedia-style articles on a wide range of topics.
How STORM Works
STORM operates through a two-stage process:
Pre-writing Stage: The system conducts internet-based research to gather relevant information and references, subsequently generating a structured outline for the desired topic.
Writing Stage: Utilizing the compiled outline and references, STORM crafts a detailed article complete with citations, ensuring the content is both informative and verifiable.
To enhance the depth and breadth of its research, STORM employs strategies such as Perspective-Guided Question Asking and Simulated Conversations, enabling it to explore various viewpoints and gather comprehensive information.
Introducing Co-STORM
Building upon STORM's capabilities, the team introduced Co-STORM, a collaborative system that facilitates human-AI interaction during the knowledge curation process. Co-STORM features multiple AI agents, including experts and moderators, who engage in dynamic discussions with human users to refine and expand upon the generated content. This collaborative approach ensures that the final articles are more aligned with user preferences and maintain high-quality standards.
Applications and Accessibility
STORM and Co-STORM are particularly beneficial for academics, researchers, students, and content creators seeking to generate well-structured articles efficiently. The systems assist in organizing complex information, providing citations, and offering diverse perspectives on various topics.
For those interested in exploring STORM's capabilities, a live research preview is available at storm.genie.stanford.edu. Additionally, the project's source code is accessible on GitHub, allowing developers to customize and integrate STORM into their workflows.
By leveraging STORM and Co-STORM, users can streamline the knowledge curation process, ensuring the creation of accurate, comprehensive, and well-cited articles on a multitude of subjects.
